Employers and Public Favor Graduates Who Can Write and Communicate

I’m definitely passing this article on to my students!  Here’s the heart of it:

“American adults and employers want colleges to produce graduates who can think critically and creatively, and can communicate orally and in writing, according to the results of a public-opinion survey released by Northeastern University here on Tuesday.”

This definitely jives with what I hear employers tell me when they discover that I teach writing.  I’ve had everyone from a non-profit CEO to a car salesperson tell me how important writing is in their work and how they value employees who have a knack for it.

The challenge as a college instructor, I think, is creating a class that pushes students to think critically and creatively while also getting them to communicate their ideas clearly and in an engaging way.  But, I have to say, I love that challenge.
